A Tale of Two Trailers

Frankly, I am not sure what this says about me, the audience, or the films being advertised, but I was struck by the crowd reactions to them as they compare to mine. It was a sold out screening of Get Him to the Greek. The last two trailers were The Other Guys and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Both films I am interested in seeing, but to different degrees.

Shrek Forever After

shrek42_large2001 saw the arrival of Shrek. It was Dreamworks latest foray int feature animation and it proved to be a big hit and the animation division could finally contend with Pixar (who was and continues to be top dog in computer animation). It told the story of an ogre trying to find some meaning to his life and finding love with a princess held captive by a dragon. It exists in a fairytale land and features all manner of recognizable characters. Three years later we returned to the land of Far Far Away to find Shrek and the Princess married, home from their honeymoon. Then came Shrek the Third in 2007, this time we get to witness Shrek play king. That brings us to now, the fourth and supposedly final film of the franchise. Where does he go now?

The Digital Cineplex: Change is on the Screen

Recently my preferred local theater switched over completely from film projectors to digital ones. It was a very exciting day for all those involved. Yes, that includes me, I have seen digital projection and it can be quite stunning. However, I was also left with a bit of sadness. The old ways are going away and it does not seem like there is any turning back.

Moon Over Tao

The third film in the Keita Amemiya Collection just may be his most accomplished film, at least of this trio. It shows the film maker with a clearly bigger budget, although still distinctly in the low-budget realm, and taking a step away from his stock in trade of robot based films. Moon Over Tao continues his trend of wringing all he can out of the budget and onto the screen with a visually inventive film. While it may not be a great film, and one that takes a certain type of movie lover to get behind, you have to respect him for what he does with so little.

DVD Pick of the Week: The Wolfman

Welcome back! Well, to some of you, anyway. To the rest of you, glad you decided to stop by and I hope this humble column helps you navigate the stacks of new releases each week. My goal is to point you toward titles of interest and warn you away from those films that seek to do nothing but leech away your time and give you nothing in return.
