Top Tens of the Past

Not sure if this is of interest to anyone or if it says anything about me, but here are all of my top ten movie lists since I started this site...

2010 Year in Review: My Top 10 Movies

Like I mentioned in the Back 10, this is more a favorites list. I just can never see all that I should and movies do get missed. This list went through a few forms before settling on this line up. The biggest thing to note is that the top three could just as easily be a tie for top dog or flip flop, they are vastly different films and depending on the day, the phase of the moon, what I had for dinner, they could change in the moment. Anyway, these are some really good films that you should give a chance.

2010 Year in Review: The Back 10 of the Top 10

2010 had a bunch of good films, sometimes they came from odd angles. They came in the form of list near-misses like Machete and Piranha 3D, yes I am serious. In any case. I thought I would double the fun of a top ten and give you my top 20. Just remember that this is no "best of" list. No matter how many movies I get to the theater for there will always be a few that got away. So, my self-imposed rules state that the only movies eligible for the list are those released in 2010 and seen on the big screen by yours truly. Without further ado, let's take a look at the back 10, aka 11-20 in the suitable order.

2010 Year in Review: Bottom 10 Movies

I see a lot of movies in a theater each year, probably too many. Every so often I try to avoid the stinkers, but there are just too many and I see too many. The problem with that is that it makes compiling this bottom list all too easy. One year I would like to do an awesome job of avoiding bad movies in such a way as to make this list a little bit challenging. Somehow, I don't think that is going to happen. In any case, let's take a look at the movies that sank to the bottom of my theatrical viewing list. It's not going to be pretty.

Netflix'ns: Flesh Freaks

Netflix'ns is a series of review shorts of films discovered on Netflix, be it DVD or streaming. For better or worse, I sat through these films and have lived to tell the tale. These are not so much reviews as just comments on the film watched. This is also a work in progress.

Movie Review: Gulliver's Travels in 3D (2010)

gulliverstravels1_largeWhen I first heard about this new take on Gulliver's Travels with Jack Black I was curious. I like Black and I bet it could be pretty funny. Then footage started coming out and my hopes dropped, it did not look good at all. The buzz seemed to support my dropped expectations. There was a lot of negative word surrounding it and it successfully killed my idea of seeing the movie. It went on the list alongside Yogi Bear, Little Fockers, and the new Chronicles of Narnia movie as movies I planned on skipping this holiday season. Then I perused Roger Ebert's three star review and the idea of sitting through Gulliver re-entered my mind.

2010 Year in Review: 5 Disappointments and 5 Surprises

The first stop on my journey back through the movies of 2010 is not with the best or the worst. I figured it would be better to split the difference and take a look at a few of the surprises and disappointments that the year delivered. None of the movies below were good enough or bad enough to appear on either of those lists, but for one reason or another either surprised or disappointed (duh), yours truly. Each list will be alphabetical and will not play favorites. Also, I am going a more simplistic route with brief comments on each.

Movie Review: True Grit (2010)

truegrit1_largeThe Western is a genre that has taken me a long time to warm up to. Actually, it is still an ongoing process as there are countless genre classics left for me to watch. It is just a genre that did not immediately grab me when I was first getting into movies. I was initially drawn to science fiction and horror (still am) and next to those, the western just could not compare. Now, while I am getting to like the genre, I cannot quite point to what it was that began to change my mind, but I do know that Tombstone didn't hurt. My recent full discovery of the Man with No Name Trilogy took it to another level, and now there is the fantastic new True Grit that does nothing but increase my interest in the Western.
