Netflix'ns: Pin

Netflix'ns is a series of review shorts of films, new and old, seen on Netflix, be it DVD or streaming. For better or worse, I sat through these films and have lived to tell the tale. These are not so much reviews as just comments on the film watched. Some will be first time views, others will be revisits. This is a work in progress.

Movie Review: River of Darkness

Each year I watch a lot of movies. Good, bad, mediocre, I watch pretty much whatever I can get my hands on although I do tend towards genre fare. Being wired the way I am I was certainly intrigued by the idea of a horror movie starring a few professional wrestlers. While that concept is likely to send a lot of you running for the nearest exit it brought me knocking asking for a peek. The door was answered and I got a peek; unfortunately, when it was through I am wishing that no one was home.

Movie Review: Win Win

Here is a movie that doesn't have a disagreeable bone in its body. It has a set up not unlike a sitcom, even some of its execution is sitcom-like, but Win Win is better than that. This is a movie that is not great by any stretch, but is aware of what it is and what it wants to do. It sets its goal and does just that. And what is it that it does? It tells a story filled with well-meaning people who find themselves in a situation unfamiliar to them and how they deal with it.

Blu-ray Review: The Terror (1963)

The Terror [Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Pack]Roger Corman is a movie legend. He has famously said that he has never lost money on any of the films he has made. Heck, he even wrote a book about it, How I Made A Hundred Movies In Hollywood And Never Lost A Dime. He demonstrates his frugality and resourcefulness with the drive-in favorite The Terror. The movie was shot on leftover sets from other American International Pictures (Corman's company) features like Haunted Palace and The Raven. The result may have fared well in the drive-in and grindhouse days, but today it waffles between low budget bore and charming example of old school film making. Then there is the matter of the cast, but we will get to that later.

RIP Yvette Vickers

This morning I read that Yvette Vickers had died. I stumbled across it at Bloody Disgusting. Frankly, I cannot say I recognized the name, but being the horror buff that I am I checked out the article. What I found simultaneously horrified me and saddened. It said that her body was found mummified, which indicated that she could have been dead for more than a year already. I can only imagine what her neighbor must have felt when she made what must have been a grisly discovery.

Music Review: Rabbits - Lower Forms

Lower FormsI do not think I will ever be amazed by how many bands there are that I know little to nothing about. So many of the bands I have written about only came to my attention because I was writing about them. I would like to saw that I would have come across a few of them had I not started this site so many years ago but I cannot say of that would have happened or not. On the other hand there are bands that I wish I had not come across. Rabbits is one of those bands. Ugh. Listening to them helps me appreciate the pretty things I life.

Concert Review: Welcome to the Family w/ Avenged Sevenfold, Three Days Grace, Sevendust (4/30/11, Times Union Center Albany, NY)

It was a couple of months back when a friend asked ominously "Want to go to a concert?" Of course I was interested, then he told who was playing and I was definitely in. It sounded like a good time for live music. Avenged Sevenfold and Sevendust? You can consider that a winning combo. Toss in Three Days Grace for a little bonus material and now you have a show. It's been a few years since I have seen either A7X or Sevendust and I was definitely interested in seeing them again.
