Experience Recap: Dead til Dawn Drive-In 2013

It was over two years ago that there was supposed to be a big two night drive in marathon out in west Pennsylvania. Two nights, ten movies, it was looking like an awesome time for fans of Italian zombies and 70's exploitation. Sadly, it never happened. I never got to experience an all night orgy of 35mm joy. Fortunately, there are people out there who see the possibilities and step in to fill the void. Phil and Paul (from It Came Schenectady) staged a one night zombie-thon in 2012, Dead til Dawn Zombiefest. Sadly, I missed that too.

Sci Fi Invasion: Rocket Attack USA

Sometimes I have to wonder what they were thinking with some of the choices for the Sci Fi Invasion box set. I mean, yes, I am expecting a lot of bad movies, but some of them barely qualify as science fiction. Of course, I realize they are padding put the movie total with whatever public domain titles they come across that could possibly be considered as part of the genre. For example, the last film, Trapped by Television, is not a science fiction movie, but the title and the act that there is a little technology involved puts it in line.

The Remakes are Coming! RUN!!!

I am tired of people complaining about remakes. I get it, many are not terribly fond of them. The thing is, they aren't going away. They are a part of Hollywood and always have been. I a, also pretty sure that the studios behind said remakes are not all that concerned about you not liking them. Complain all you want, the simple fact is that you are in the minority. We, the community of online movie lovers, count for a small number, a number small enough that if all remake hates stayed home, the movie would still do well.

Movie Review: Insidious - Chapter 2

It was just a couple years ago that producer Oren Peli (director of Paranormal Activity) teamed with director James Wan (Saw, Death Sentence) and writer Leigh Whannell (Saw, Dead Silence) to bring us the surprisingly awesome Insidious. It was a movie that was truly, well, insidious. Now, a few months back I saw a trailer for Insidious: Chapter 2, I had no idea they were even making a sequel. Sadly, the trailer looked uninspired. It advertised a movie that looked like nothing more than a rehash of the first. Still, I have become a Wan supported and had hopes that it would deliver, especially after the excellent The Conjuring.

Sci Fi Invasion: Trapped by Television

Well, the Sci Fi Invasion box has hit a stumbling block as the sixth disk begins. Yes, the last couple of movies have not necessarily been great, but they were certainly entertaining in their own special way. We have now come across the oldest film I have yet come across in this set and it's connection to the science fiction genre is tenuous at best. It is not exactly a bad movie, but it is a largely forgettable. Frankly, I think the only reason it is here is as public domain filler, it really is not a science fiction film.

FantaCon Returns! - A Con Experience

It was probably about a year ago that I first heard about FantaCon. Of course, it isn't hard to believe that a convention would fly under my radar, I have not been on the con going circuit for very long. I came to learn that this was a popular sow that had started up back in the 1970s, but for one reason or another stopped in the late 1980s. It was announced last ear that it would be making its triumphant return to Albany, NY. By the looks of it, it was a small show compared o some of the ones I have been going to, but it had an intriguing guest list.

Sci Fi Invasion: The Creeping Terror

The Sci Fi Invasion box set is starting to pick up steam. Granted, it is just little puffs of barely seen steam, but it is more than it has been able to muster over a two film span yet. You would have to consider it a tough task to follow up the entertaining mash up oddity Future Hunters. Now, to be honest, the follow up feature is entertaining in a completely different fashion. With Future Hunters you have a movie purposefully made to be an weird stew of a movie, this feature, on the other hand, never had a chance.

Sci Fi Invasion: Future Hunters

When approaching a massive box set, like the Sci Fi Invasion set, you have to be prepared to sit through a large number of stinkers. Through the first few disks of the set I have sat through some movies I would not wish on my worst enemy. Why do I do it? Why should anyone do it? For the experience, of course. Every movie adds to the experience and you have to believe that something interesting is going to come along. Fortunately, I have stumbled across something interesting. Not good, mind you.

Movie Review: Riddick

Way back in 2000 writer/director David Twohy introduced us to the character of Riddick in Pitch Black. It was a solid science fiction/action/horror movie that was born from a rejected screenplay for Alien 3. I remember liking that movie instantly. Four years later we got a much more epic sequel, Chronicles of Riddick. That movie was met with a good deal of distaste, although I recall liking it, despite being some years since I have seen it. Now, nine years later we have a second sequel, simply titled Riddick. I find it's existence to be a bit curious, but not wholly unwelcome.

Movie Review: American Mary

Do you ever feel like you are the last to know about something? I think we have all been there at one time or another. That is how I feel about the writing/directing/acting duo. the Soska sisters, Jen and Sylvia. The first made a splash a few years ago with Dead Hooker in a Trunk, a title I have heard of often but have not yet seen. Now they have made a seemingly bigger splash with American Mary. Another movie that has made the rounds before arriving in front of my eye sockets.

Movie Review: The Grandmaster (2013)

It sure feels like a lot of movies have been made about Ip Man lately. I am used to martial arts films about Wong Fei Hung. In any case, The Grandmaster from auteur Wong Kar Wai is the latest, and likely most anticipated as it has been in and around production for the better part of the decade. In the meantime, it was beaten to theaters by a pair of Donnie Yen/Wilson Yip pairings covering the life of the man who famously became Bruce Lee's teacher. This latest feature is also the most traditionally arty and is quite beautiful and poetic.

Sci Fi Invasion: It's Alive (1969)

I think it is a good thing that I stepped away from this Sci Fi Invasion box for awhile. There are just so many stinkers on here. It is something of a chore to sit through some of these movies. Still, I will soldier on and will eventually get through this set. There has to be a least a couple more watchable movies in there, right? This latest outing, a made for television movie from 1969, is not good and I feel bad for the poor souls who stumbled across it in the middle of the night so many years ago.

Movie Review: Getaway (2013)

To call Getaway the best film directed by Courtney Solomon does not really say much. The man, better known for producing and being one of the names behind After Dark Films, previously directed Dungeons and Dragons and An American Haunting. Those are a couple films that I hold no affection for. Now, the surprising thing here is that while this is not, I repeat, not a good movie, I found it to still be watchable. Yes, it does lead an assault on your cranium, but there is something about the relentlessness that kept me watching.
